Mandarin Oriental Painting
“Above Washington DC” – a painting by Zhong-Yang Huang that hangs in the lobby of the Mandarin Oriental Hotel in Washington DC.
It depicts Empress Dowager, the last Empress of China, swinging over Washington DC
I have very fond memories of this painting and the trip my now fiance’s and I took to Washington DC in 2008. We stayed at the Mandarin Oriental, which was exquisite, and I enjoyed every art museum and special gallery show on the Mall over that weekend. I was accompanied in mostly good humour as I swooned over works by Goldsworthy and an exhibition celebrating the life-works of Robert Rauschenberg. I always remember the exhibits.
At the hotel, on that same trip, I even indulged in a spa experience and massage. Maybe it’s that I’m part Estonian, but I am very keen on the health benefits of body work and heat therapies. For me, they are centering and transformative. I also cannot be in more peace that in and near water. The spa at the hotel is well-known and amazing.
When I finally finish my next piece, the inspiration from this work and the fond memories of our trip should be pretty clear.
